Vowel Formants

The lowest formants of the radiated spectrum, generated by the resonances of the vocal tract that are lowest in frequency. Some authors cite only the first two formants as vowel formants, while others, such as Ladefoged, mention the first three. The lowest resonances are the most tunable, and therefore the most significant in defining the vowel quality of a sound. Their resultant formants together are called the vowel formants.[1]
