A multilayered structure consisting of an epithelium, connective tissue known as the lamina propria, and thyroarytenoid muscle that projects medially from the interior of the thyroid cartilage. The edges of these structures vibrate in the airstream to produce voice and provide a valve to protect the larynx and increase interthoracic pressure.[1]
