The sensorimotor system responsible for maintaining balance and bodily orientation relative to gravity. With its sensory organ or apparatus of the inner ear, the vestibular system is responsible for encoding information about equilibrium, the sense of balance. It is essential to spatial cognition. Its primary role is to monitor and correct postural and autonomic equilibrium during voluntary behaviors such as singing, and to contribute to the calculation of the spatial coordinates that position our effectors to make the right action (e.g., sounds) at the right time. See Equilibrium.[1]
