A tube that is open at one end and closed at the other. Such a resonator can establish standing waves (resonances) at the quarter-wave length, and odd numbered multiples of that length: 3/4 wavelength, 5/4 wavelength, 7/4 wavelength, etc. The vocal tract is a form of quarter wave resonator, but with more variable, tunable wavelengths.[1]
