A cartilaginous structure that houses the vocal folds, and performs two biologic functions: (1) protecting the lungs and airway from foreign bodies (food, liquids, etc) with the help of the epiglottis; and (2) creating torque via thoracic fixation in order to lift heavy objects or push things out of the body (childbirth).[1]
