Acoustic impedance in any sound transmission element is defined as the ratio of pressure to flow. Because there can be time delay or time advance in the flow response, impedance is quantified by a complex number. The real part is called “resistance” and the imaginary part “reactance.” Reactance, in turn, can be positive (inertive) when there is time delay or negative (compliant) when there is time advance. See inertance, inertive reactance.[1]
