A horseshoe-shaped bone located in the superior region of the neck, suspended superiorly by the suprahyoid muscles including the mylohyoid, anterior digastric, hyoglossus, stylohyoid and geniohyoid. The hyoid can be depressed by contraction of the omohyoid, thyrohyoid and sternohyoid. The hyoid serves as the base of the tongue. Elevation of the hyoid during swallowing simultaneously elevates the larynx.[1]
