The type of resonance that occurs as the result of vibrations of air molecules and reflections of sound waves within a void. Singers utilize free resonance (as opposed to forced resonance, which depends on a mechanical connection from a vibrator to a resonator). To function as a free resonator, a structure must be hollow, have volume, and have an opening through which sound waves can exit. All wind instruments, including organs, also operate according to free resonance principles.[1]
