The primary muscle of inspiration; dome-shaped; arches up inside the ribs, dividing the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity; normally involuntary in respiration, but recruitable to some extent as an antagonist to exhalatory muscles during phonation. See lotta vocale.[1]
