Refers to the airstream which passes through the glottis and vocal tract, dispersing and declining in velocity rapidly upon leaving the mouth. It is not the carrier of acoustic energy. During phonation, the kinetic energy of the moving flow of air is converted into acoustic energy through the oscillation of the vocal folds.[1]
